Hakodate is a famous tour destination among travelers who want to explore Hokkaido prefecture more deeply. Its beautiful scenery and delicious foods attract people from all over the world every year. Despite its notorious fame as a place with heavy snow, Hakodate is also famous for dining because total 34 restaurants were listed in Michelin Guide Hokkaido. Restaurants in Hakodate are famous for using fresh ingredients which are just bought from local farms and markets.

In addition to this, it is also possible to try dishes from various cultures and countris since Hakodate was one of the first port cities in Japan where accepted foreign cultures along with Yokohama and Nagasaki.  As Hakodate started accepting foreign cultures from early in history, it influenced their market as well opening foreign cuisines such as French, Italian, and Spanish restaurants. For sure, you can also try traditional Japanese foods such as sushi and sukiyaki.

sushi/Kaisendon

Let’s start from Japanese food because you are traveling to Japan. Sushi or fish related foods such as kaisen-don is probably the one a lot of foreign tourists want to try in Japan. Hakodate is a perfect place where you can try fresh seafood, since the location itself is near sea. There also is a local market where you can try seafood with reasonable price. Never think sushi or kaisen-don is usually had only for dinner. You can try the freshest and best seafood ever during morning time in Hakodate!

(1) Kihara

[source : https://www.hakodate.travel/en/food_and_drink]

Kihara was listed on Hokkaido Michelin in 2017. Here is not very cheap place to have sushi, since one person may spend around JPY 5,000~10,000 for a meal. It takes only 10 minutes by car from Hakodate airport to Kihara and you can enjoy the scenery of Tsugaru Strait while you are having a meal. As here was introduced by Michelin Bib Gourmand, you may not be able to enter the restaurant if you didn’t make a reservation in advance. Besides, it is also possible that you may not be able to use tables and introduced to counter seat.

If you are using counter seat, you will be able to see how sushi is made. There are several chefs working at the same time and one of chef will give your order one by one and explain how to enjoy it. The price system here is interesting since they adopt price quotation. Yes, such a scary word! Even if you had a meal with JPY 5,000 today, you may have to pay JPY 7,000 tomorrow. However, at the same time it really means that they use very fresh ingredients which are bought on the day.

(2) Donburi Yokocho Market

Kaisen-don is a rice bowl topped with seafood such as salmon roe, sashimi, and scallop. Donburi Yokocho is located just a minute away from Hakodate Station and here is famous as morning market. There are various types seafood you can choose to be topped in your rice bowl. If you like salmon roe only, it is only possible to order donburi with full of salmon roe. Each shop will have at least more than 20 menus and honestly, the flavor is similar in most places.

As Hokkaido prefecture is famous for crabs, you can easily see menus including crabs. The taste of kaisen-don is very similar to sushi. There is a rice and numerous seafood are topped on the bowl. You can add soy sauce and wasabi to your bowl and have a bite. This place offers many different restaurants so you won’t have to wait for a long time. Enjoy your breakfast at Hakodate Donburi Yokocho Market!

Sukiyaki

Sukiyaki is classified as nabemono, which is Japanese hot pot style food. Sukiyaki consists of thin-sliced beef, vegetables and other ingredients like tofu and it is cooked slowly. It uses a iron pot which is usually wide and shallow and soy sauce and mirin(Japanese rice wine) are used to make flavor. Sukiyaki restaurants provide raw egg with a small bowl, and you can beat eggs and dip cooked ingredients into egg before you eat.

(1) Sukiyaki Asari

Sukiyaki Asari is also listed in Michelin Guide. The restaurant opend 117 years ago and you can feel its history from building’s appearance. If you get inside, you will feel like you are visiting traditional ryokan since inside also keeps traditional Japanese style room, which is tatami room, and it looks more likely to be a house rather than a restaurant. If you wish to visit here during holidays or weekends, making a reservation in advance is necessary. You may ask your hotel front to make a reservation instead of you.

You don’t know how to cook sukiyaki by yourself? No worries. The staff at Sukiyaki Asari will do everything for you and all you have to do is just enjoying their atmosphere and mouthwatering sukiyaki. Once you finish all ingredients in the nabe(hot pot), only soup will be left. So you are leaving? No. You can put udon noodles into the soup. Since they start making from vegetables and meat, the soup itself has deep savor. It costs JPY 1,500~4,000 for a meal.

ramen

(1) Kamome

Wanna try Japanese seafood ramen? If so, Kamome is waiting for you. Kamome is a ramen restaurant where has more than 45 years history. It is located just near local market so it won’t be difficult to find here. One bowl of ramen costs JPY 680~1,150 and you will be able to taste all types of seafood when ordering JPY 1,150 menu. Do you know sea urchin is very expensive in Japan? Kamome even puts sea urchin on ramen. This shows Hakodate is an amazing place where you can have fresh seafood with reasonable price.

There are three types of soup available in Kamome, including salt, soy sauce and miso. The most popular menu there is the Kamome Ramen – an extravagant seafood ramen. The chicken and pork broth-based soup is miso flavoured. What makes it attractive is the high-quality seafood included such as crabs, sea urchin, squid, scallops and shrimps. This is arguably the most gorgeous seafood ramen you can enjoy in Hakodate!

This restaurant is not very big, and is operated by grandpa-aged chef.  Many Japanese people say here is not very sanitary; however, if you have no problem with eating street foods in anywhere in the world, you will basically don’t even think about sanitary issues here. This just shows how Japanese restaurants and customers are rigid about sanitary.

(2) Ajisai

Ramen Ajisai opened in 1930 and by now many people visit here. In previous posting, I mentioned that Sapporo is famous for Miso ramen. However, I would like to say Hakodate is popular with shio ramen, which means salt-based ramen. Similar to other ramen places in Hokkaido, you can buy tickets from vending machine. This vending machine offers various languages including English and Chinese and menus are provided with picture, so you don’t have to worry about ordering.

You can choose the cooked level of noodle and you may not have to wait since Ramen Ajisai offers more than 50 seats at once. Though here is famous for Shio ramen, they also have menus like miso ramen and sho-yu(soy sause) ramen. One ramen bowl costs below JPY 1,000.

Hamburger

(1) Lucky Pierrot

“What? A burger in Japan? But I don’t want to try something I can try anywhere in my home country.”

Yes, that’s really true. However, Lucky Pierrot is different. Lucky Pierrot is a burger franchise in Hakodate; however, you will be surprised by its appearance at a first glance. Because it doesn’t look like a place where you can have a burger! It just looks like here is… well.. a restaurant version of Don Qui Jote.. feel like they sell everything with cheap price.

Once you enter the restaurant, you will be get shocked by the numbers of their menus. I gave up counting at 50. The burger itself is not very expensive as JPY 300~400. The interesting point of this restaurant is that burgers have Japanese flavors such as Teriyaki and its size makes people surprised. They also have menus other than burgers like curry rice so I recommend visiting here while you are staying in Hakodate.
